You’ve heard it over and over again to use a Reference track while mixing. Now you are going to hear it once more, Use a Reference track while mixing.

It will help you improve your mix by comparing, it’ll push you to take your mix from good to better and then make it great.

You need to import into your session a song that you feel is beautifully mixed. Try to find something similar to the song you are working on. Something in the same genre.

As you go along mixing A/B your mix with the reference track. When you finish mixing all the instruments listen to the reference and compare it to yours then make adjustments. When you finish the vocals on your mix, switch over to the reference and compare.

You will notice right away the small things you need to do. Adding width or brightness or bring the vocals more forward. At the end of the day your mix should be much closer to that next level sound we are all after.
